How accurate is FamilyMap?

AT&T FamilyMap uses a number of techniques to determine a phone's location. AT&T phones that have A-GPS (Assisted GPS) return the most accurate locations when they have a clear line of sight to GPS satellites. For example, the phone is outside or is in a car near a window.

For phones where A-GPS is not available, FamilyMap uses cell tower information to provide the most accurate location possible, which is usually within a few hundred yards to a few miles of the phone's actual location. This includes iPhones, non A-GPS phones, as well as A-GPS phones that are not in a clear line of sight to GPS satellites.

How do I use AT&T FamilyMap from my computer?

AT&T FamilyMap has a Web browser application that allows you to locate your family members from any computer. Simply enter www.att.com/familymap into your mobile browser and sign in with the same phone number and password you use to access AT&T FamilyMap from your phone.

From there you can personalize the application, change your preferences and manage your account information.

Can AT&T FamilyMap locate a lost or stolen phone?

Yes, you can signup for a FamilyMap account to locate a lost or stolen phone.

Note: The phone must be turned on and in AT&T network coverage area to be located. The location will be approximate and will not be accurate enough to find a lost phone, for example, in a specific room in a house. When a phone becomes locatable, it receives a text message indicating that it can be located via the AT&T FamilyMap product.

Do my family members know when I locate them?

For security reasons, phones receive a text message from AT&T FamilyMap when they become locatable. Additionally, locatable phones receive a periodic notification via text message that they can be located. These messages are received about once a month.

Subscribers have the option of notifying a phone every time it is located in lieu of periodic notifications. To manage your preferences, click Child Notifications from the Manage Account screen.

Is my family's location information protected?

AT&T knows that your location information is sensitive and has taken steps to ensure that information is secure. We maintain a variety of physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your location information. For example, all of your location information is securely stored as needed to provide the service and is deleted in seven-day interval.
